Naturally Inspired at Flinders University
Danpal was proud to supply a spectacular bespoke natural light solution to Sarah Constructions for the Flinders University Biodiversity Facility, conceived by H2O Architects in conjunction with Phillips Pilkington Architects.
Requirements for this educational research facility including a brightly coloured entry feature, vibrant skylight diffusers suspended from internal ceilings and decorative yellow external cladding.
Providing support for teaching and research into native fauna, the building’s colour scheme reflects its function by referencing both the organic hues of the local environment as well some of the brighter and more intense tones found in the native birds, reptiles and fish being researched.
The skylight diffusers added light and vitality to the central circulation area, with intriguing angular geometry as well as bespoke frameless corner junctions formed using folded green and yellow translucent panels.
The yellow wall cladding had a customised opaque internal face manufactured into the panel, creating a bright glossy materiality and a spectacular appearance when backlit at night while also ensuring internal façade elements were completely concealed from view.
The facility was awarded the 2022 Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture and a High Commendation in the Commercial Construction $2M to $25M category at the 2022 Australian Institute of Building Awards.
