Diffused Architectural Glazing Systems for Bunnings Newstead

Bunnings Newstead

Danpalon® Chosen For Next-Gen Bunnings Newstead Store

With a long-standing legacy of supporting aspirational architectural projects with innovative daylight architecture solutions, Danpal was engaged to engineer and supply a custom architectural glazing system for a next-gen Bunnings Newstead store.

Custom Danpalon® architectural glazing system for Bunnings Newstead.

Boasting a total floor area of more than 17,000sqm over four levels, the Newstead store is more than double the size of a typical Bunnings. Featuring six street-level tenancies for retail or office space, the state-of-the-art mixed-use site is located about 4km from the CBD, consisting of a basement carpark, main warehouse, outdoor nursery, bagged goods area, cafe and timber trade sales area.

For this enormous hardware chain’s next-gen concept, the design brief detailed a large-scale translucent façade with good insulation and light diffusion, capable of supporting itself over 5 metre spans. Furthermore, oversized panels were requested to avoid having transom joints in the façade.

Danpal worked closely with ThomsonAdsett and Broad Construction to design and engineer a beautiful, yet practical and cost-effective, architectural glazing system.

“The design of Bunnings Warehouse at Newstead relates to the fine-grain and sawtooth form typical of the historic Newstead wool stores and industrial buildings,” architects of Thomson Adsett write.

“The clean, simple sawtooth roof provides indirect south daylighting and opportunities for solar panel installation on north facing roof shapes. It also assists to visually break down the large volume of the building into three sections and creates a strong street presence.”

Having built a reputation of supplying innovative solutions for pioneering architectural projects, Danpal worked closely with ThomsonAdsett and Broad Construction architecture and design firm to design and engineer a practical, cost-effective architectural glazing system that offered a rapid, easy installation, whilst overcoming significant engineering requirements of the bustling inner-city site location.

Danpalon®’s diffused architectural glazing systems offered the perfect combination of aesthetic grace, innovative structural engineering and daylight performance for this ambitious next-gen store concept.

Danpalon® panels with structural aluminium connectors provided the combination of strength and lightness required. The custom-made 16mm Danpalon® panels measured up to 16 metres long, spanning the large floor heights in a high wind area.

By harnessing the power of light architecture, Danpal was honoured to support the retail giant’s commitment to creating inspiring destination retail experiences. Beneficial for consumers and employees alike, the Danpalon® glazing system offers all the physiological benefits of daylight, whilst also delivering UV protection and shelter from the elements.

Delivering energy efficiencies to boot, Danpalon®’s diffused architectural glazing systems offered the perfect combination of aesthetic grace, innovative structural engineering and daylight performance for this ambitious next-gen store concept.
